japan honors egypt's ambassador maged abdel-fattah

Cairo - Egypt | Saturday, November 06, 2021:

Mr. Mamdouh Abbas, President of the Board of Trustees of the Kemet Boutros-Ghali Foundation for Peace and Knowledge (KBG), congratulated Ambassador Maged Abdel Fattah, Permanent Observer for the League of Arab States at the United Nations and member of the Board of Advisors of KBG, on being awarded the Order of the Japanese Empire on the autumn of 2021.

The Government of Japan announced that Ambassador Maged Abdel Fattah would be among the foreign recipients of the autumn 2021 imperial decoration, in recognition of his contribution as one of the organizers of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) process, which aims to strengthen relations between Japan and Africa.

Ambassador Abdel Fattah is a Permanent Observer for the League of Arab States at the United Nations, former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, and Special Adviser to the Secretary-General of the United Nations on Africa. In a statement published in New York on Friday, the Japanese Mission to the United Nations stated that the Ambassador would receive the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star.

The statement noted that the TICAD had been a vital platform for more than a quarter of a century to benefit from broad multilateral cooperation for Africa's development. The statement explained that the Covid-19 pandemic had shown how a human security crisis could quickly spread across borders and demonstrated the interdependence of all States and regions. These efforts have made the TICAD, based on the principle of "ownership and partnership," more important than ever, especially in mobilizing international efforts to support Africa in overcoming the Covid- 19 pandemic crisis and better rebuilding.

The Office of the Special Adviser to the United Nations Secretary-General on Africa represents the United Nations and has been the co-convener of TICAD since its inception in 1993. Through the Tokyo Conference and the Office of the Special Adviser to the United Nations Secretary-General on Africa, Japan addresses many of the most pressing challenges on the African continent in support of development and peace.

During his distinguished career, Ambassador Maged Abdel Fattah has made significant contributions to the TICAD, particularly in formulating a comprehensive TICAD process, which has confirmed the growing partnerships with the African Union and the United Nations. Under the leadership of Ambassador Abdel Fattah, the Tokyo International Conference has gained greater importance as a comprehensive multilateral forum, in line with the 2030 Sustainable Development Plan and the 2063 African Union agenda.
